The Journey of iPhones

 iPhone first-generation is the very first iPhone that released in 2007. It first released in the United States in June. iPhone first-generation is known with several names like "The First-Generation iPhone, iPhone 2G and iPhone 1 after 2008 to differentiate it from later models.

Let's have a review on iPhones one by one from start to end!


The First iPhone

iPhone first-generation is the very first iPhone that released in 2007. It first released in the United States in June. iPhone first-generation is known with several names like "The First-Generation iPhone, iPhone 2G and iPhone 1 after 2008 to differentiate it from later models.




Slogans were used at the time of release which was,
        "This is the only beginning" and "Apple reinvents the phone"

This iPhone weighed 135g. The operating system which it had was iPhone OS 1.0. However, it supported by the iPhone till iPhone OS 3.1.3.  The battery mAh of this iPhone was 1400, Lithium-ion battery.

The price of this iPhone when it released was $499 for the 4GB model. The price for the 8GB model $599. iPhone 2G bought by 6.1 Million people around the world.

iPhone 3G

The iPhone 3G was the 2nd iPhone by Apple.Inc. This phone was introduced on June 9, 2008, at WWDC 2008 at Moscone Center in San Francisco, United States. 






Slogans used by Apple at the time of the introduction of this iPhone was,

    "The iPhone you have been waiting for", "The first phone to beat the iPhone", "Twice as fast, for half the price", "The most advanced mobile OS. Now even more advanced" and "New features, new price"

Around 1 Million Units sold over the first weekend.

 This iPhone released on July 11, 2008. It discontinued from June 7, 2010. 


In the beginning, it was released with iPhone OS 2.0 and lasted till iOS 4.2.1.

Some of the brief specs of iPhone 3G:


This iPhone weighed 133g. Storage of this iPhone had two variants, One model with 8GB and the other with 16GB. It had 1150 mAh of battery. The rear Camera had 2MP with geotagging.

The price for the 8GB model was $199 and $299 for the 16GB Model. It was way cheaper than the first iPhone.

iPhone 3GS

iPhone 3GS was the third iPhone released by Apple. It was introduced on June 8, 2009, at the WWDC at Moscone Center in San Francisco.



Slogans used by Apple at the time of introduction:

    "The fastest, smartest phone yet" and "More to love. Less to pay"

This iPhone released on June 9, 2009. Within the first weekend of the release, over 1M units sold. This iPhone officially discontinued from Apple on June 24, 2010. However, only models with 16GB and 32GB stopped at that time. The 8GB model continued till September 12, 2012. 

It was released with iPhone OS 3.0 and supported till iOS 6.1.6

Some of the brief specs of iPhone 3GS:

Mass of this iPhone was 135g. It had 3 models, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB. 1220mAh was the battery capacity. The rear Camera had 3MP with video recording.

Price of the 8GB model iPhone 3GS was just $99! $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the new 32GB model.

iPhone 4

iPhone 4 was first introduced on June 7, 2010, at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.



The slogan used by Apple:
    "This changes everything. Again"

GSM model (Black) released on June 24, 2010. CDMA model (Black) released on February 10, 2011. GSM and CDMA models (White) released on April 28, 2011. Over 600k pre-orders noted within 24 hours.  This iPhone discontinued officially on September 10, 2013.

iPhone 4 was released with iOS 4.0 and supported till iOS 7.1.2

Some brief Specs:

The mass of this iPhone is 137g. It launched with three variant models, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB. 1420mAh was the battery capacity. The rear camera offered 5MP with the front camera 0.3MP.

8GB model was sold for . 16GB for $649 and 32GB for $749.

iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S is the fifth iPhone. It introduced on October 4, 2011, at Apple's Cupertino Campus. It was the last iPhone product announced by the former CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs


The slogan used by Apple:
    "The most amazing iPhone yet"

This iPhone first released on October 14, 2011. Around 4M units sold in the first three days of initial sales. 60M+ units sold in total. This iPhone officially discontinued on September 20, 2012 (32 and 64 GB variant) and September 9, 2014 (16 and 8 GB variant)

It released with iOS 5.0 and supported till iOS 9.3.6

Some brief specs:

It weighed 140g. This iPhone came with a new variant of 64GB. However, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB continued. 1430mAh was the battery capacity. The rear camera offered 8MP with HD video recording. The front camera had 0.3MP.

The 16GB varient was sold for $649, 32GB for $749 and $849 for 64GB varient

iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 is the 6th generation iPhone. It formally introduced at a press event in September. It was the first iPhone that developed under the guidance of the new CEO of Apple, Tim Cook. 

iPhone 5's design was used three times, first with the iPhone 5 itself, then with iPhone 5S and iPhone SE (First Generation). You will get to know iPhone 5S and iPhone SE 1st-Generation further.

It first released on September 21, 2012. Over 2 Million units sold out in just 24 hours. And in just three days, Apple sold five million units. Apple discontinued iPhone 5 on September 10, 2013.

It launched with iOS 6.0 and supported till iOS 10.3.4

Some brief specs:

Mass of this iPhone was 112g. Apple discontinued 8GB variant storage and started with 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. 1440mAh the battery capacity. The rear camera offered 8MP with HD video at 30 frame/s. The front camera had 1.2MP HD video.

iPhone 5C

iPhone 5C is the seventh generation of the iPhone. This iPhone was introduced on September 10, 2013.

It was first released on September 20, 2013. Apple discontinued this device on September 9, 2014 (16GB and 32GB), September 9, 2015 (8GB) and February 17, 2016 (India).

It launched with iOS 7.0 and supported till iOS 10.3.3.

It weighed 132g. It launched with 8GB, 16GB and 32GB variants. 1510mAh was the battery capacity of this iPhone. The rear camera offered 8MP with HD video recording. The front camera had 1.2MP with HD video recording.

iPhone 5S

iPhone 5s is the seventh-generation iPhone. It introduced in September 2013, alongside the iPhone 5c. The only difference it has is the fingerprint sensor. iPhone 5s is the first iPhone to get a fingerprint option.

It released on September 20, 2013 and discontinued on September 9, 2014 (64GB) and March 21, 2016 (16GB and 32GB)

Some brief specs of iPhone 5s:

With a mass of 112g, the iPhone 5s came along with three variants, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. 1560mAh the battery capacity of this iPhone. The rear camera offered 8MP with image stabilization. HD video recording also supported. Burst mode and face detection also included with slow motion. The front camera had 1.2 MP, HD video recording with Auto HDR for photos.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are the 8th generations. These iPhones were introduced on September 9, 2014. They included larger displays, a faster processor, upgraded cameras, improved LTE and Wi-FI connectivity and support for a near field communications-based mobile payments offering.


Slogans used by Apple:
    "Bigger than bigger" and "The two and only"

It first released on September 19, 2014, with 16GB, 64GB and the new, 128GB. Later on March 10, 2017, a 32GB model launched. 4 Million+ units sold on the first day; 13 Million at the opening weekend; 220 Million+ iPhones in total!. 
Apple officially discontinued these iPhones on September 9, 2015 (128GB Models), on September 7, 2016 (16GB and 64GB models) and on September 12, 2018 (32GB models)

It was launched with iOS 8.0 (16GB/64GB/128GB). However, the 32GB model was launched with iOS 10.2.1. It supported till iOS 12.5.4.

Some brief specs:

Mass of iPhone 6 was 129g. iPhone 6 Plus had 172g of mass. These iPhones launched with 16GB, 54GB and 128GB. However, iPhone 6 had an extra variant model of 32GB variant. iPhone 6 had 1810mAh of battery capacity. iPhone 6 Plus launched with 2915mAh of battery. Both of these iPhones offered 8 MP with 1.5 focus pixels on a rare camera. True Tone flashes, Autofocus and IR filter introduced with some extra features. In addition to this, iPhone 6 Plus got optical image stabilization for photos. The front camera got 12MP with exposure control etc.

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are the ninth generations of iPhone. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus jointly were themselves replaced as the flagship devices of the iPhone series. iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus were announced on September 9, 2015, at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco by Tim Cook.

    "One powerful phone"

These iPhones first released on September 25, 2015. 13 Million iPhones sold at launch weekend. Apple discontinued these iPhones on September 7, 2016 (16GB and 64GB) and on September 12,2018 (32GB and 128GB).

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus launched with iOS 8.0 in them. These iPhones are still supported by Apple. They currently have iOS 14.6 and a Beta version of iOS 15.

Some brief specs on these iPhones:

The mass of the iPhone 6s was 143g. Mass of the iPhone 6s Plus was 192g. These iPhones launched with 16GB, 32GB, 64GGB and 128GB models. 1715mAh is the battery capacity of 6s and 6s Plus offered with 2750mAh of battery capacity. The rear camera offered with 12MP with 4k video recording at 30fps. The front camera had 5MP with HD video recording and Retina Flash.

iPhone SE First-Generation


iPhone SE First-Generation known as iPhone SE 1 is part of the 9th generation of iPhone. This iPhone was introduced in 2016. This iPhone re-released with larger capacities later. It has a similar physical design as iPhone 5.



The slogan used by Apple when iPhone SE was introduced:
    "A big step for small"

This iPhone first released on March 31, 2016 (16GB and 64GB). However, it released with larger capacities of 32GB and 128GB. Apple discontinued 16GB and 64GB models on March 21, 2017, and discontinued 32GB and 128GB models on September 12, 2018.

This iPhone launched with iOS 9.3 and it is still supported by Apple. Currently, it has iOS 14.6 and Beta version of iOS 15

Some brief specs of iPhone SE:

It launched with a mass of 113g. 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB were the storage variants of this iPhone. 1524mAh was the battery capacity. The rear camera offered with 12.2MP with IR filter and 4k video recording with 30fps. The front camera had 1.2MP with an f/2.4 aperture.

The starting price of this iPhone was $249

iPhone 7 and 7 Plus

iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are the tenth generation of the iPhone. They were announced at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco by Tim Cook on September 7, 2016. These iPhones got an extra variant of 256GB.



The slogan used by Apple when these iPhones introduced:
    "This is 7"
iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus first released on September 16, 2016. These iPhones discontinued from Apple on September 10, 2019.

They were released with iOS 10.0.1 and Apple still supports these iPhones. Currently, it has iOS 14.6.

Some specs of these iPhones:

Mass of iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus: 138g and 188g, respectively.

Storage: 32GB, 128GB and 256GB

Camera: The rear camera offered 12MP with a six-element lens. 4K video recording at 30fps was available. The front camera had a 7MP with f/2.2 aperture with HD video recording.

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are the 11th generation iPhones. These iPhones were introduced at an event at the Steve Jobs Theater in the Apple Park Campus on September 22, 2017.

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus first released on September 22, 2017. These iPhones discontinued by Apple on April 15, 2020, with the release of the iPhone SE 2. However, Apple discontinued 256GB models on September 10, 2019.

These launched with iOS 11.0 and they are still supported by Apple with iOS 14.6 in them.

Camera: The rear camera offer 12MP with the six-element lens, quad-LED "True Tone" flash with slow sync, autofocus and 4K video recording. In addition to these, iPhone 8 Plus has a telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and Portrait Mode.

iPhone X (10)


The iPhone X is the 11th generation iPhone. It was available to pre-order on October 27, 2017. This was the first iPhone to get FaceID. This generation made a big change on iPhone. This iPhone was released in the same year of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.

    "Say hello to the future"

This iPhone first released on November 3, 2017. Apple discontinued this iPhone on September 12, 2018. 

This iPhone launched with iOS 11.0.1 and it is still supported by Apple. Currently, it has iOS 14.6.

iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max

iPhone XS and XS Max are the twelfth-generation flagships of the iPhone. These iPhones introduced by Tim Cook at Steve Jobs Theater on September 12, 2018. These iPhones were the first ones to get a 512GB storage variant.

These iPhones first released on September 21, 2018. Apple officially discontinued these iPhones on September 10, 2019.

iPhone XR

iPhone XR is also the twelfth-generation iPhone. It released in the same year when iPhone XS and XS Max released.  It is the second the iPhone to be released in white, yellow and blue, the first being the iPhone 5C in 2013.


Slogan used by Apple when this iPhone introduced:

It released on October 26, 2018. The 256GB variant of the iPhone XR discontinued the release of the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro on September 10, 2019. Other variant models of the iPhone XR continued. 

It launched with iOS 12 and it is still supported by Apple. Currently it has iOS 14.6.

It is the least expensive device in Apple's iPhone X line of devices, with a current starting price of $499.

iPhone 11 

iPhone 11 is the thirteen-generation iPhone. It introduced on September 10, 2019 at Steve Jobs Theatre in Apple Park, Cupertino by Apple CEO Tim Cook. 


Slogan used by Apple when this phone introduced:

It first released on September 20, 2019, one day after the official public released of iOS 13. This iPhone is still continued by Apple. 

It launched with iOS 13 and it is supported by Apple. Currently, it has iOS 14.6.

iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone Pro Max are also the thirteenth-generation iPhones. Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled the devices on September 10, 2019 at Steve Jobs Theatre at Apple Park.

They were first released on September 20, 2019. It is still continued by Apple.

iPhone SE 2

This is second-generation iPhone SE (also known as the iPhone SE 2 or the iPhone SE 2020). It the part of the 13th generation of the iPhone. It was first announced on April 15, 2020 with discontinuation of iPhone 8 series.

iPhone SE 2 was first released on April 24, 2020. It is still continued by Apple. 

It was launched with iOS 13.4 and is still supported by Apple. Currently it has iOS 14.6.

iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini are the fourteenth-generation of iPhone. They were unveiled at a virtually held Apple Special Event at Apple Park in Cupertino, California on October 16, 2020.

iPhone 12 first released on October 23, 2020. iPhone 12 Mini first launched on November 13, 2020.
